Bolivia: In the Bowels of Potosi's Cerrro Rico

Bolivia. Potosi. In the bowels of Cerro Rico. Mined for silver since Inca times, and now for tin, this mountain, which dominates Potosi, is dangerously drilled through by countless galleries, many long lost to minds and eyes until new galleries crash through them. Though the air outside is frigid, the heat inside is such that I was able to observe miners inside tiny cavities work while being sprayed with the cold water of a hose.

Bolivie.

Old Conquistador Descendant

Old Conquistador Descendant

Peru. Andes Mountains. Pampa de Cangallo, near Ayacucho. Old Morochuco man. The Morochuco descend from the followers of Almagro. After the conquistador was executed by Francisco Pizarro, they hid among Indians. Some had Spanish wives. Others took Indian wives. Those with Spanish wives remained more Caucasian, like this old man, and proud of the distinction, used to let their thick beards grow long. They look down on the others. Until recently, both kept the predatory ways of their Spanish ancestors and were feared by surrounding tribes. They remain great horse riders.

Pérou. Montagnes des Andes. Pampa de Cangallo  près d’Ayacucho. Homme Morochuco.

Threatened for the Gold Under their Feet

Brazil. Amazon rain forest. Yanomami Indian decorates his son's head with birds down. The Yanomami live under the constant threat of massacre by illegal gold miners, loggers, and cattle barons. It’s common to dismiss tribal peoples as savages not worth protection. They are no savages. Isolated from the great civilizing movements they have simply perpetuated an ancient way of life. Savages are so whose greed does not respect life—human r animal.

Brésil. Amazonie.
